IfZ - Institute of Sugar Beet Research

The Institute of Sugar Beet Research (IfZ) is an agricultural research institute that specialises in researching the cultivation of sugar beet in the agroecosystem. The IfZ focuses on advancing agricultural practices, increasing yields, and ensuring the sustainable production of sugar beet. Its work includes characterisation of new varieties, studying diseases, and optimizing cultivation techniques to support farmers and the sugar industry. Through research and innovation, the IfZ aims to contribute to a more efficient and environmentally friendly sugar beet production. The close regional collaboration with the Georg-August University of Göttingen is a special feature in the German-speaking university landscape. We are actively involved in the teaching of Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes in Agricultural Sciences and the doctoral programme (Graduate School of Forestry and Agricultural Sciences).

Role in the project

The role of  in this project is the development and application of biotests to screen Beta vulgaris CWR for increased tolerance and resistance against biotic and and abiotic stresses. The pathogens are the bacterial causes of the disease “Syndrome des Basses Richesses” (SBR) and the sugar beet infecting beet curly top virus (BCTV). Both diseases are vectored by different planthopper species. The abiotic stress against which CWR should be screened for resistance/tolerance is drought stress.
