CREA - Council for Agricultural Research and Economics
The Council for Agricultural Research and Economics (CREA) is a leading Italian research organization dedicated to advancing knowledge and innovation in the fields of agriculture, agri-food, forestry, and fisheries. With a strong focus on sustainability, CREA conducts cutting-edge research to improve the efficiency, quality, and environmental impact of agricultural practices. CREA plays an important role in developing solutions that address global challenges such as food security, climate change, and rural development. CREA is organized in 12 research centres and the Centre for Genomics and Bioinformatics is part of Pro-Wild. The Centre studies the crop plant genomes and their interaction with environment to unveil the molecular mechanisms that control plant development, crop yield and qualitative features of plant end-products.
Role in the project
CREA leads workpackage 3 dedicated to exploiting CWRs to increase crop diversity. The objectives will be achieved through development of genetic material, phenotypic characterization for response to abiotic, biotic stresses and quality, and high-throughput molecular characterization. Genomic regions identified in wild species will be used to improve cultivated varieties.
CREA provides a large panel of wild emmer (T. durum ssp. dicoccoides) accessions representing the genetic diversity of wild wheat as well as several segregating populations (NAMs, ILs; F2 and RILS) to dissect the traits carried by wild relative of wheat.
Finally, the multi sensor platform PlantArray, available at CREA will be used in the project to characterize water use efficiency.
