The Pro-Wild project consortium was delighted to welcome Christian Schöb, project coordinator of its sister project COUSIN, to its September kick-off meeting to give a short introduction to their exciting work. The COUSIN project (Crop wild relatives utilisation and conservation for sustainable agriculture) is funded under the same call as Pro-Wild (Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, HORIZON-CL6-2023-BIODIV-01) under the Horizon Europe Programme of the European Union. It is running from January 2024 to December 2028 and has 26 partners from 12 countries.
The COUSIN project focuses on strengthening sustainable agriculture by identifying ways to use crop wild relatives (CWRs). Its main objectives are to recognise valuable in-situ genetic reserves, identify traits needed by stakeholders, and incorporate CWRs into breeding and farming activities. Additionally, COUSIN provides accessible information on CWRs and promotes awareness through training initiatives.
By developing a trans-situ conservation strategy, the project coordinates both in-situ and ex-situ approaches to effectively conserve CWRs. This aligns closely with our mission and goals, as both projects are dedicated to preserving genetic diversity, with a shared emphasis on two key species: wheat and brassica. COUSIN’s efforts extend to five flagship crops in total: wheat, barley, pea, lettuce, and brassica. We look forward to exploring further collaboration with the COUSIN team.
Stay tuned for further updates on our joint activities!
