An insightful presentation was delivered by Véronique Decroocq, coordinator of the FruitDiv project (Exploiting the Untapped potential of Fruit tree Wild DIVersity for Sustainable Agriculture; Grant agreement ID: 101133964), at the kick-off meeting in September. FruitDiv, a sister project funded under the same call as Pro-Wild (Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, HORIZON-CL6-2023-BIODIV-01), shares similar motivations and overarching goals, focusing on promoting biodiversity and sustainability in agricultural systems. While Pro-Wild focuses on wheat, sugar beet, and Brassica, FruitDiv targets stone fruits (Prunus) and pome fruits (Malus and Pyrus).
The aim of the FruitDiv project is to monitor, conserve, and genetically characterise these fruit species across Europe, particularly in biodiversity hotspots. By promoting sustainable data sharing and developing innovative breeding tools, wild genetic resources are being integrated into breeding programmes to support low-input agricultural practices. The project is running from January 2024 to December 2028 and unites 26 organisations from 10 EU Member States and four other countries.
Synergies with FruitDiv are being explored, with the aim of expanding the audience and increasing the impact of both projects. A fruitful partnership is expected to drive meaningful progress in sustainable agriculture.
