Protecting genetic resources: essential strategies for biodiversity

Protecting agricultural genetic resources is essential for ensuring resilience and sustainability in agriculture and forestry systems. The Pro-Wild project, driven by these objectives, is funded under the European Union’s Horizon Europe Programme.

The EU CAP Network - a platform established to bring together stakeholders and resources related to the implementation of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) of the European Union (EU) - has recently published a policy insight highlighting the importance of protecting genetic resources.

The article looks at international and EU level policy developments on the protection of genetic resources and reviews stakeholder-led projects and initiatives, including the Pro-Wild project. Horizon and the CAP, are well placed to support the two complementary approaches to conservation - in-situ and ex-situ.

Recent policy initiatives at EU level include the Farm to Fork Strategy and the new EU Forestry Strategy for 2030. Another key achievement is the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030, which outlines a thorough, ambitious and long-term approach to nature conservation and the restoration of degraded ecosystems.

Maintaining high levels of genetic diversity allows species to adapt to changing climates and environments. The conservation of agricultural genetic resources for both crops and livestock is essential to maintain this diversity and ensure the resilience and sustainability of agricultural and forestry systems.
